Picnic Tables FAQs

What is the history of the picnic?

Interestingly enough the etymology of the word picnic doesn’t have a direct origin, but is guessed to be around the 1700s or 1800s in England and France. Art and literature begins to describe what it is to picnic around this time period, although an exact date is difficult to pin. Generally historians and those who study words can pin the word to the 1692 edition of the Orgines de la Langue Francaise de Menage, which defines the word as people who brought their own wine to a restaurant. The word first appeared in English in 1748 from Lord Chesterfield who was talking about the picnic when combined with food, friends, drinking, and conversation.

How did the picnic come about?

Well the origin of the picnic, the word, is difficult to pinpoint, but the circumstances that made the picnic available are well known. The leisure time that arose out of the industrial revolution, both the first or green revolution, and the second industrial revolution allowed individuals to work less time for a standardized pay rate. The worked no longer had to work sun up to sun down and was not required to work on the weekends. For this reason, things like the Sunday Drive in the countryside, or the Saturday picnic was developed with the advent of free time, or leisure time. Free time was the primary cause of the development of the expedition to go picnicking, although many people do it today for a breath of fresh air and a decent view?

What areas make a good picnic location?

This question relies primarily on the taste of the person in question, although there are some typical responses which indicate the preferences of the general human population. Generally speaking, picnics take place in the summer, when it is warm enough to venture outdoors comfortably for long periods of time. Also, depending on the temperature you might want to look into a more shaded area. Natural settings are typically preferred, so a park, lake, or mountainside are the choice locations, although in European countries, people have been known to picnic in the plaza of the city center. Most of the time the natural atmosphere also calls for a more quiet, less bustling area, although this is relative to each person. Finally, the company is what helps to define the prime location. If you are hiking in the mountains with a friend, almost anywhere with a view can serve, but if your apartment is in the basement of a building, a simple trip to the green lawn outside might serve your purposes quite adequately.
